The Maui Zendo 2019 three-day Sesshin with Nelson Foster will be held from Friday, March 1 to Monday, March 4, 2019 at the Rinzai Zen Mission, Baldwin Beach, Paia.

The cost of the Sesshin for full time participants is $150. If you plan to attend part time, the fee is $25 per block. (For Maui Zendo Sangha members who will make a pledge of $550.00 for 2019 the pledge amount includes the Sesshin fee). We offer $50 off for neighbor island participants to help with airfare. There are also some scholarships available—just ask!

Check in on Friday, March 1 will be between 3:30 pm and 4:30 pm.

Bring a brown bag supper for your meal that evening. We will eat together at 5:00 pm, followed by a work meeting at 5:45 p.m. Orientation and Sesshin cautions will then follow at 7:00 p.m. Attendance at the orientation meeting is mandatory for all participants, even for part-timers in order to be familiar with all the workings of the Sesshin.

The Sesshin closing ceremony will be held around noon on Monday, March 4. We will then have tea, clean the temple, pack up and then eat lunch. After lunch, we pack up the kitchen so please plan on leaving the property no earlier than 4:00 PM.

Accommodations:

You need to supply your own bedding. You must bring your own towel and items for personal hygiene. We will provide a futon mattress for sleeping in the dojo or residence rooms. You can opt to camp at the temple in your own tent and Maui Zendo has a few tents available on a first come first-served basis. Indicate if you will need one. Please note on the attached Registration Form that you want to camp and if you need a tent.

Writing to let you know that instead of our five-day Sesshin we will be holding a two-day Zazenkai at RZM on Saturday, November 4 and Sunday, November 5.

We will begin both days 9 am (please come earlier so we can all settle in at 9) and end at 4 pm. Lunch on both days will be silent. Please bring your own lunch and water.

This is an excellent opportunity for intensive practice so, at Zazenkai close on Saturday, we will not be having tea service but will instead just go to our homes to continue our practice. On Sunday, Michael will lead a dharma discussion on the subject of Sangha following a simple supper we will provide.

As we are not quite certain of the exact details of the Sunday schedule, please let us know if you will be participating in the Zazenkai and if you plan to stay for supper and dharma talk on Sunday. This way we can email just those who are interested in attending.

Fees for Zazenkai will be $20 per day (but do not let lack of finances stop you!) along with any dana you wish to offer to Michael and to the temple.

Also, off island participants may take $50 off of the fee to help offset travel expenses.

“Fire! Little Fire Ants in Hawaii”, a new documentary on the little fire ant, will air this Saturday, 6:30 pm, on KITV channel 4 and again the following Saturday, June 4th at 6:30pm

This 30-minute documentary examines the spread of the little fire ant across our Islands and the people who work to address one of the most significant invasive species problems we face

Until recently, little fire ants were limited primarily to Hawaii Island but as the infestations have grown there, so has the inevitability of their spread.

First introduced to Puna in 1999, and shortly thereafter to Kauai, these ants are one of the worst invasive species imaginable in Hawaii. They invade houses, gardens, and forests. The ants are also arboreal; they swarm up plants and trees. When disturbed, they drop off, falling onto people and animals. Unsuspecting victims are left with painful stings.

In January of 2014 little fire ants were detected on Oahu, leading to a multi-agency response resulting in containment and eradication. These tiny pests have hitchhiked to Maui and Lanai as well. Meanwhile Hawaii Island residents are faced with creating sanctuaries amidst a sea of stinging ants. Find out more on stoptheant.org
