March 2013 Sesshin

Maui Zendo’s 2013 3 Day Sesshin with Nelson Foster will be held from Friday, March 8 to Monday, March 11, 2013 at the Rinzai Zen Mission, Baldwin Beach, Paia.

The cost of the Sesshin for full time participants is $190.00. If you plan to attend part time, the fee is $25 per block. (For Maui Zendo Sangha members who made a pledge of $550.00 for 2013 the pledge amount includes the Sesshin fee.)

Check in will be between 3:30 pm and 4:30 pm on Friday, March 8. Please bring a brown bag supper for your meal that evening. We will eat together at 5:00 pm, followed by a work meeting at 5:45 p.m. Orientation and Sesshin cautions will then follow at 7:00 p.m. Attendance at the orientation meeting is mandatory for all participants, even for part-timers in order to be familiar with all the workings of the Sesshin.

The Sesshin closing ceremony will be held around noon on Monday. We will then have tea, eat lunch, clean the temple and pack up. Plan on leaving the property no later then 4:30 PM. Please make your off-island reservation departures no earlier than 4:30 p.m.

Accommodations
You need to supply your own bedding to sleep in the temple or on the temple grounds. If you do not want to sleep in the temple or in a shaded outdoor area under the temple you can opt to camp in your tent near the temple. You must also bring your own towel and items for personal hygiene.

We look forward to your participation and ask that you sign up no later than February 25 to help the planners with their jobs as there will be much to do. We ask for your kokua.

Sangha Meeting Monday January 21st

We will be holding a Sangha meeting during our regularly scheduled Zazen on Monday January 21st 5:30pm – 7:00pm at the Rinzai Zen Mission.

All are welcome to attend. The main purpose of the meeting is to finalize and clarify our dues structure for 2013 that includes the Committed Support proposal. We also want to assign the monthly Jikijitsu commitment for Monday night Zazen, as well as Zazenkai coordinators. This worked so well last year and was a huge help to share the responsibility. The March Sesshin is coming up so we will discuss that too. And we would like to set other Sangha meeting dates for 2013, as well.

Look forward to seeing everyone.

Samu Practice

Aloha,

On Sundays, January 13 and February 10 from 8 am to 10 am we will be cleaning Rinzai Zen Mission. It is another great opportunity to use the temple for Samu practice and we hope more of us will show up!

Also, please RSVP if you haven’t if you intend to some to Zazenkai on 1/12.

Rohatsu and Zazenkai

Starting with the Monday evening zazen on December 3rd and through December 7th, we will be celebrating Rohatsu by sitting each night next week at the same time as our regular Monday evening schedule, 5:30-7:00pm. Please come as often as you can.

On Saturday December 8th we will end Rohatsu with a Zazenkai led by Michael Kieran. Rev.Yamaguchi will do the Jodo-E ceremony (that honors Buddha’s enlightenment) at the beginning of Zazenkai.

After Zazenkai, please join everyone for a potluck Sangha Party at Ken Findeisen’s house. Party will start in the evening around 6:30pm. Michael and Theresa will attend too.

I can send directions to the Findeisen house for those that need.

Looking forward to next week.

Thanks,
Ken
