The Maui Zendo is a lay Zen Buddhist sangha in the Diamond Sangha traditionan independent lineage founded in Honolulu by Robert Aitken Roshi, a dharma heir in the Harada-Yasutani-Yamada lineage. In style and practice the Maui Zendo has roots in both
Rinzai and Soto schools of Zen.
The Diamond Sangha, especially through the teaching of Aitken
Roshi and his successors, places a strong emphasis on Zen
practice in everyday life. Our practice is taken into relationships,
work, families and all ordinary aspects of life.
You are welcome to practice with us. We have weekly group
zazen, monthly zazenkai (all day meditation) and sesshin
(meditation retreats) throughout the year.
Information for those new to our practice
We meet on Monday evenings from 5:00pm - 6:30pm at the Rinzai Zen Temple next to Baldwin Beach Park in Paia. Write us at firstname.lastname@example.org and we will prepare for your attendance. Please arrive 15-20 minutes early so someone can orientate you in our forms and teach you about the practice of zazen.
Please wear dark clothing (black, gray or brown) and a long dress or long pants. No bare shoulders. Avoid anything that could be distracting to other practitioners, such as, a strong perfume. The Temple is a special space, so please show respect at all times.
