We will be having a general Sangha Meeting on Friday November 9th at 5:30pm. Meeting will be held at the Rinzai Zen Mission. Part of the purpose of the meeting is to go over the schedule for next year and to elect directors. I will send out an agenda before the meeting. Please put the meeting on your calendar.

Zazenkai at Pa’ia Rinzai Zen Mission will be on Saturday, October 13 from 9 am to 4 pm. The fee is $20 plus any Dana you wish to offer to Michael and to the temple. Please contact us to let us know if you will be attending all or some of the day.

This Wednesday’s Zazen, August 29th, is cancelled. The temple is being used by the Rinzai Zen Mission board.

Dear Sangha,

Maui Zendo’s 2012 3 Day Sesshin with Nelson Foster will be held from Friday, September 28 to Monday October 1, 2012 at the Rinzai Zen Mission, Baldwin Beach, Paia.

The cost of the Sesshin for full time participants is $190.00. If you plan to attend part time, the fee is $25 per block.

Check in will be held between 3:30 pm and 4:30 pm. Please bring a brown bag supper for Friday. We will eat together at 5:00 pm, followed by a work meeting at 5:45 p.m. Orientation and Sesshin cautions will then follow at 7:00 p.m. Attendance at the orientation meeting is mandatory for all participants, even for part timers in order to be familiar with all the workings of the Sesshin.

The Sesshin closing ceremony will end at about noon on Monday. We will then
have tea, eat lunch, clean the temple and pack up. Plan on leaving the property no later then 4:30 PM. Please make your off-island reservation departures no earlier than 5:00 p.m.

Accommodations
You need to supply your own bedding to sleep in the temple or on the temple
grounds. If you do not want to sleep in the temple or in a shaded outdoor area under the temple you can opt to camp in your tent near the temple. You must also bring your own towel and items for personal hygiene.

We look forward to your participation and ask that you sign up no later than September 7th to help the planners with their jobs as there will be much to do.
We ask for your Kokua.

There will be no Zazen at the Rinzai Zen Mission on monday and wednesday due to the Obon Festival on Saturday the 18th. Zazen will resume Monday August 20th at 5:30pm.

We have decided to cancel the sangha party scheduled for 8/11 since it is election day and Michael cannot attend. He needs to get back to O’ahu Saturday evening.

This notice is to inform you that there has been a change to the form of the upcoming Zazenkai on August 11, 2012.

Given the upcoming Bon Festival the following Saturday at the Rinzai Zen Mission in Paia, we have decided to change the Zazenkai to a “Samu Zazenkai” or working Zazenkai.Some of you may already know the term “Samu” and maybe some may not. Put quite simply this is a means of maintaining the temple and practicing mindfulness.

Michael will give an explanation of the samu forms on Saturday.

Below is the schedule for our Samu Zazenkai.

• 8:30 – 8:50 AM | Gather, help set up zendo and hojo, orient new participants, etc.
• 8:50 – 9:00 | Densho
• 9:00 – 9:25 | Sutra service
• 9:25 – Noon | Zazen, kinhin, dokusan
• 12:00 – 1:50 PM | Lunch
• 12:50 – 1:00 | Densho
• 1:00 – 1:25 | Zazen
• 1:25 – 2:00 | Dharma Assembly
• 2:00 – 2:15 | Receive samu assignments, explanation of samu forms
• 2:15 – 3:35 | Samu practice (silent except of related questions)
• 3:35 – 3:45 | Samu clean-up, Densho (put away mops, tools. Etc.)
